Dow Hill forest at Kurseong is considered to be one of the most haunted places in India. There have reports of countless horror stories involving a death road, headless ghost and haunted school but none of them verified. The entire place is covered by huge trees blocking the sunlight and is shrouded with fog and mist, which adds to the spooky effect. According to an article published in Times of India, people have felt that they are being followed and looked at by an unseen entity. Some have felt that a red eye is staring at them and there is a ghost of a woman dressed in grey clothes. People have been committed suicide due to this strange feeling. The Victoria Boys High School, located on the Dow hill road is also reported to be haunted as people have heard boys running and laughing in the corridors even when the school is closed. Sometimes, a boy is seen staring from inside at one of the windows, while the school is closed for holidays. After walking the entire place and doing photography, I did not feel anything strange at all, nor I felt it was haunted. However, others may feel differently. According to me, maybe the stories of ghosts have been exaggerated and have just spread overtime.
You can walk to Dow Hill forest from Kurseong town, but is quite tiring as it an uphill climb for 3 kms till the end. It is better to take a shared taxi which leave from Kurseong police station frequently and charge 50 rupees. If you want to capture fog and mist, it is better to visit during monsoon. Some of the pictures that I have taken during my visit are given below –
