Kallencherry island is a small strip of land about 1 km in length connected by a bridge in Kumbalangi or Kumabalangy village. It is about 15 kms from Fort Kochi and lies in the midst of nature. It is surrounded by backwaters, tall swinging coconut trees, country boats and chinese fishing nets. It is haven for photography lovers and those seeking solitude. It has few homestays, retreats and lies hidden from tourists. I visited this island during evening and I wish that I would have spent more time in it. There are one or two shops in that area, where you can buy bottled mineral water or biscuits if you like.
As far as I have enquired, buses do not go direct to this place from Fort Kochi or mattancherry. You have to get down at Thoppumpady and take another bus or you can simply take an auto rickshaw, which will be expensive. Also, if you are coming by bus, you have to get down in the main road and then walk for 2 kms or hire an auto rickshaw. While coming out, I was lucky to get a bus straight to Ernakulam, which is the area that I was staying. Otherwise, I would have to get a bus to mattancherry or Fort Kochi and then get a ferry to Ernakulam. If you are travelling solo and visit it during evening, do not stay long after dark as you won’t find any transportation in that area and you will have to walk and reach the main road to get a bus. It is better to stay in that area in order to explore it properly.
