Udaipur is also called the “City of Lakes” and was the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar in ancient times. Udaipur is a very famous tourist destination and is visited by people all over the world for its history, culture, lakes and the old palaces. The famous James Bond film “Octopussy” was also filmed in this very city.
Explore the white city
Very few people know that Udaipur is known as the “White city” of India because of the buildings in the old part of the city are white in color. You can witness this as you walk through the old lanes near the pichola lake. However if you do not feel comfortable walking by yourself, you can easily join any walking tours conducted by local tour operators.
City palace in Udaipur is a massive palace complex on the banks of Pichola lake. It took around 400 years to be completed. Of all the palaces, that I have visited in Rajasthan, it had the best interior architecture. One can also get a panoramic view of the Udaipur city from the top of the palace. It will take around 2 hours to tour the entire palace.
Bagore ki haveli:
Bagore-ki-Haveli is a haveli on the banks of Lake Pichola at Gangori Ghat. The Prime Minister of Mewar, Amar Chand Badwa built it in the 18th century. It is not a big palace, but a small building but it is worth visiting. From the outside, it may not look much but the interior architecture is very good, there are beautiful colored glass windows inside the rooms which are worth seeing. In the evening, a puppet show is held there, which tourists may enjoy.
Pichola lake is a large artificial fresh water lake created for the purpose of providing drinking water and irrigation to the people. There are many important historical monuments built on the ghats of this lake. Best time would be to visit during sunset at Gangori Ghat. There are very few boating facilities available as I saw one tourist boat during my two day visit.
Fateh sagar lake:
Fateh sagar lake is quite underrated in terms of tourism, as it is mainly visited by locals. Nevertheless, I found to be beautiful and well maintained than Pichola lake. It has a beautiful park along the banks of the lake with mountains in the background.
If you stay in the old city, you can explore the surrounding areas by foot. If you do not feel like walking, Tuk-tuks are available for exploring different areas.
When to visit:
It is recommend to visit Udaipur from October to February, because during summer it reaches around 40°C or more.
